Optimization of Embedded Stabilizers

Chantier Naval Forillon, in collaboration with the firm Navanex, commissioned Lx Sim to analyze the behavior of a fishing vessel hull equipped with embedded stabilizers. The goal was to use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation to optimize the placement of the stabilizers in order to reduce drag and lower fuel consumption.

Challenges

  • Understanding the effects of complex geometric variations, which are impossible to estimate through manual calculations
  • Providing recommendations to improve hull efficiency, while considering propulsion, vessel mass, and cruising speed

Solutions

CFD Simulation

  • Modeling hull behavior at various speeds and conditions
  • Using CFD to visualize flow lines and pressure distribution
  • Evaluating key parameters such as hull geometry, stabilizer shape, thrust direction, and mass distribution

Comparative Analyses

  • Direct comparison between the original concept and the new configuration to quantify drag reduction and fuel savings
  • Producing clear and interpretable results to guide design decisions

Results

Thanks to our team’s expertise and advanced use of CFD simulation, the optimized concept achieved:

  • A 10–15% reduction in drag
  • A better understanding of the vessel’s overall behavior
  • Concrete recommendations with measurable impact on fuel consumption

A tangible success for the client, once again demonstrating the importance of digital simulation in optimizing complex naval projects.
